ABSTRACT The purpose of this short communication is to provide information on the depository for the primary types of the new species described by Alvarenga et al. (2015) and thus validate the names suggested therein. The depository for the primary types of the new species Emersonella appendigaster Alvarenga, Costa & Hansson, 2015 and Emersonella frieirocostai Alvarenga, Costa & Hansson, 2015 is the Museu de Zoologia, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil (MZSP).

Chrysoperla externa (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) es uno de los enemigos naturales del pulgón de la hoja del maíz Rhopalosiphum maidis (Hemiptera: Aphididae) y tiene potencial aplicación en el control biológico contra esta plaga. Fue investigado el efecto de la temperatura sobre el desarrollo y capacidad depredadora de C. externa alimentada con ninfas de R. maidis. Huevos frescos del crisópido fueron mantenidos a 15, 20, 25 ó 30 °C bajo una humedad relativa de 70% y 12 h fotofase. Fueron evaluadas la duración del período embrionario, la duración y viabilidad de la fase larvaria (primer, segundo y tercer estadio), fases de prepupa, pupa y adulta del depredador. La duración de todas las etapas del desarrollo se redujo al aumentar la temperatura, mientras que la viabilidad de todas las fases alcanzó el 100 % a los 20 y 25 °C. El umbral de temperatura y el valor de la constante térmica K obtenidos para el ciclo de vida completo (de huevo a adulto) fueron 10,7 ºC y 377,8 grados-día, respectivamente. Independiente de la temperatura, el consumo de ninfas de R. maidis por C. externa aumentó con el desarrollo de las larvas. A los 20 y 25 °C, el número promedio de pulgones consumidos durante toda la fase larvaria alcanzó aproximadamente 350 especímenes. Se concluye que el desarrollo de las formas inmaduras de C. externa alimentada con R. maidis, así como la viabilidad y su capacidad depredadora, se favorecen a temperaturas entre 20 y 25 °C.

Chrysoperla externa (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) is one of the natural enemies of the corn leaf aphid Rhopalosiphum maidis (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and has potential application in the biological control of that pest. The effect of' temperature on the development and the predatory capacity of this chrysopid fed with R. maidis nymphs was investigated. Fresh eggs of C. externa were maintained at 15, 20, 25 or 30 °C under 70% relative humidity and 12 h photophase, and the duration of the embryonic stage, as well as the duration and viability of the larval (first, second and third instars), prepupal, pupal and adult forms of the predator were evaluated. The duration of each of these stages decreased with increasing temperature, whilst the viabilities of all forms attained 100% at 20 and 25 °C. The threshold temperature and the value of the thermal constant K obtained for the complete life cycle (egg to adult) were, respectively, 10.7 °C and 377.8 degree-days. Independent of temperature, the consumption of R. maidis nymphs by C. externa increased as the larvae reached maturity. At 20 and 25 °C the average number of aphids consumed during the complete larval stage was maximal at approximately 350 specimens. It is concluded, therefore, that the development of the immature forms of C. externa fed on R. maidis as well as its viability and predatory capacity, were favored at temperatures between 20 and 25 °C.

Emersonella Girault, 1916 is a wasp genus including species that parasitize Chrysomelidae (Coleoptera) eggs, mainly Cassidinae. It occurs only in the Americas, and is primarily distributed in the Neotropical Region. In this paper two new species of Emersonella from the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil are described and compared to similar species. Emersonella appendigastersp. nov. is characterized by an elongate last gastral tergite in female, thoracic dorsum flat, femora and tibiae yellowish in female, malar sulcus absent, frontal suture slightly down-curved laterally, eyes with scattered hairs, frons and vertex smooth, and propodeum smooth with small anteromedian foveae. Emersonella frieirocostaisp. nov. is characterized by an elongate gaster in the female, at most 1.3 times as long as mesosoma and pointed at apex, propodeum with two large anterolateral foveae, pronotum hardly visible in dorsal view, with posterior part smooth, transverse pronotal carina present and malar sulcus absent. Both species are egg parasitoids of Metriona elatior (Klug, 1820) (Chrysomelidae) which feeds on Solanum viarum Dunal (Solanaceae).

Avaliou-se a seletividade fisiológica de alguns produtos fitossanitários utilizados em cafeeiro a larvas de Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) e seus reflexos nas fases subseqüentes do desenvolvimento do predador. Os tratamentos avaliados, em g i.a./L de água foram: 1- endosulfam (Thiodan 350 CE - 1,75), 2- clorpirifós (Lorsban 480 CE - 1,2), 3- betaciflutrina (Turbo 50 CE - 0,013), 4- enxofre (Kumulus 800 PM - 4,0), 5- azociclotina (Peropal 250 PM - 0,31), 6- oxicloreto de cobre (Cuprogarb 500 PM - 5,0) e 7- testemunha (água). As pulverizações foram realizadas em larvas de primeiro, segundo e terceiro ínstares de C. externa, por meio de torre de Potter. Em seguida, as larvas foram individualizadas em tubos de vidro e mantidas em câmara climatizada regulada a 25 ± 2ºC, UR de 70 ± 10% e fotofase de 12h. A toxicidade dos produtos foi calculada em função do seu efeito total (E) e categorizada conforme escala proposta pela IOBC. Clorpirifós e betaciflutrina foram nocivos a larvas de primeiro ínstar (E > 99%) e os demais foram seletivos. Clorpirifós foi também tóxico a larvas de segundo e terceiro ínstares, sendo os demais compostos inócuos ao predador (E < 30%). Nenhum dos produtos avaliados afetou a duração e sobrevivência de pupas, ou a razão sexual e fase adulta dos indivíduos provenientes de larvas tratadas. Endosulfam, enxofre, azociclotina e oxicloreto de cobre foram seletivos para larvas de primeiro, segundo e terceiro ínstares de C. externa e não afetaram as fases subseqüentes do desenvolvimento desse crisopídeo, podendo ser utilizados no manejo de pragas na cultura do cafeeiro.

The objective was to evaluate the selectivity of pesticides used in coffee crops to larvae of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) and their effects on the subsequent developmental stages of the predator. The treatments in g a.i./L of water were: 1 - endosulfan (Thiodan 350 CE - 1.75), 2 - chlorpyrifos (Lorsban 480 CE - 1.2), 3 - betacyfluthrin (Turbo 50 CE - 0.013), 4 - sulphur (Kumulus 800 PM - 4.0), 5 - azocyclotin (Peropal 250 PM - 0.31), 6 - copper oxichloride (Cuprogarb 500 PM - 5.0) and 7 - control (water). The products were sprayed on first, second and third-instar larvae using a Potter's tower. The larvae were individualized in glass tubes and maintained at 25 ± 2ºC, RH of 70 ± 10% and 12h photophase. The toxicity of the pesticides was calculated based in their total effect (E) and classified according to recommendations of IOBC. Chlorpyrifos and betacyfluthrin were harmful to first-instar larvae (E > 99%). Endosulfan, sulphur, azocyclotin and copper oxichloride were harmless to first-instar larvae and the others were selective. Chlorpyrifos was also toxic to second and third-instar larvae, and the other compounds were selective (E < 30%). None of the pesticides affected the duration and survival rate of pupae or the sex ratio of the adults originated from treated larvae. Endosulfan, sulphur, azocyclotin and copper oxichloride were harmless to the larval stage of C. externa and did not affect the subsequent stages, so that they can be recommended in IPM programs for the coffee crop.

Avaliou-se a seletividade dos inseticidas abamectina, lufenurom, óxido de fenbutatina, tebufenozide, tiaclopride e deltametrina utilizados em citros para pupas e adultos de Chrysoperla externa (Hagen). Os experimentos foram conduzidos no Departamento de Entomologia da UFLA, Lavras, MG. As pulverizações foram realizadas por meio de torre de Potter utilizando-se 1,5 ± 0,5 mg/cm². Após a pulverização, as pupas foram colocadas em tubos de vidro e mantidas em câmara climática, e os adultos em gaiolas de PVC em sala climatizada (25 ± 2ºC, 70 ± 10% UR e fotofase de 12h). O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com seis inseticidas e dez repetições, sendo cada uma formada por três pupas ou um casal de adultos. Também foi avaliado o efeito do lufenurom na capacidade reprodutiva quando pulverizado sobre machos ou fêmeas desse predador. Os produtos foram enquadrados em classes de toxicidade seguindo metodologia estabelecida pela Organização Internacional para Controle Biológico e Integrado de Animais e Plantas Nocivos (IOBC). Todos os produtos foram seletivos para pupas (E < 30% de mortalidade). Tiaclopride e deltametrina foram tóxicos aos adultos (E > 99% de mortalidade), sendo que óxido de fenbutatina e tebufenozide mostraram-se seletivos. Quando pulverizado somente sobre fêmeas de C. externa, lufenurom reduziu significativamente a viabilidade de ovos. Os produtos óxido de fenbutatina e tebufenozide, em função da baixa toxicidade apresentada, podem ser recomendados no manejo integrado de pragas na cultura dos citros em associação com C. externa.

The selectivity of the insecticides abamectin, lufenuron, fenbutatin oxide, tebufenozide, thiacloprid and deltamethrin used in citrus crops was evaluated for pupae and adults of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen). The experiments were conducted in the Entomology Department of the Universidade Federal de Lavras, MG, Brazil. The spraying was accomplished by means of Potter tower with volume of application of 1.5 ± 0.5 mg/cm². After spraying, the pupae were kept in test tubes in a climatic chamber and the adults in PVC cages in a room at 25 ± 2ºC, 70 ± 10% RH and 12h photophase. A completely randomized experimental design was used, with six products and ten replicates, each one composed of three pupae or a pair of adults. The action of lufenuron on males or females of C. externa was also evaluated under a completely randomized design with three treatments and ten replicates, each one composed of one pair. The insecticides were classified following the method established by the International Organization for Biological and Integrated Control of Noxious Animals and Plants (IOBC). All compounds were selective to the pupae (E < 30% of mortality). However, thiacloprid and deltamethrin were toxic to the adults (E > 99% of mortality), whereas fenbutatin oxide and tebufenozide were selective. Lufenuron reduced the survival rate of the egg when sprayed on the females. Thus, the results indicate that only fenbutatin oxide and tebufenozide could be used with C. externa in integrated pest management programs in citrus crops.

Avaliou-se a ação fisiológica de triclorfom, triflumurom, endosulfam, fempropatrina, clorpirifós, tebufenozide e esfenvalerato em larvas de 2º ínstar de Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) e seus efeitos subseqüentes sobre o 3º ínstar, pupas e adultos. Os experimentos foram realizados em casa de vegetação, avaliando-se o efeito de contato dos inseticidas em larvas de 2º ínstar, mantidas em algodoeiros pulverizados, e o efeito sobre larvas nesse estádio que se alimentaram de ovos de Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) tratados com inseticidas. Foi avaliada a sobrevivência dos indivíduos no 2º e 3º ínstares e na fase de pupa. Na fase adulta, verificou-se a produção diária e total de ovos durante 30 dias e a viabilidade e fertilidade dos ovos. Endosulfam, tebufenozide e esfenvalerato foram seletivos às larvas de 2º ínstar tanto por contato como pela sucção do conteúdo de ovos tratados. Para larvas de 3º ínstar, esses inseticidas não foram prejudiciais, assim como o triflumuron. A sobrevivência de pupas oriundas de larvas de 2º ínstar tratadas com fempropatrina e tebufenozide não foi afetada. Triclorfom, fempropatrina e tebufenozide não provocaram redução no número total de ovos produzidos pelas fêmeas provenientes de larvas alimentadas com ovos tratados. Esfenvalerato, por contato, não reduziu significativamente a produção total de ovos. Por se apresentar seletivo às larvas de 2º ínstar de C. externa, tebufenozide apresenta características favoráveis para uso em associação com liberações inundativas do predador para o controle de pragas na cultura do algodoeiro, embora tenha afetado sua capacidade reprodutiva.

The physiological action of the insecticides trichlorfon, triflumuron, endosulfan, fenpropathrin, chlorpiryfos, tebufenozide and esfenvalerate to 2nd-instar larvae of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) and subsequent effects on 3rd-instar larvae, pupae and adults were evaluated. The bioassays were carried out under greenhouse conditions. The effect on larvae fed on eggs of Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) treated with the insecticides was evaluated, as well as the contact effect on 2nd-instar larvae kept on sprayed cotton plants. The survival percentage of individuals in the second- and 3rd-instar and in the pupae stage was determined. For adults, the daily and total production of eggs during 30 days, the viability and the fertility of eggs were evaluated. Endosulfan, tebufenozide and esfenvalerate were selective to 2nd-instar larvae by contact on sprayed plants as well as by suction of treated eggs. For 3rd-instar larvae, neither endosulfan, tebufenozide, esfenvalerate nor triflumuron were harmful. The survival of pupae from treated 2nd-instar larvae with fenpropathrin and tebufenozide was not affected. Trichlorfon, fenpropathrin and tebufenozide caused no reduction in the total number of eggs produced by females derived from 2nd-instar larvae fed with treated eggs of A. kuehniella. Females originated from larvae that kept contact with sprayed cotton plants with esfenvalerate, had no significant reduction in the total egg production. Although tebufenozide affected the reproductive traits of C. externa, it can be recommended for controlling the pests on cotton crop in association with inundative releases of this predator.

O conhecimento da influência de fatores abióticos sobre os aspectos bioecológicos dos crisopídeos, especialmente das espécies sul-americanas, é importante para a correta utilização desses predadores em programas de controle biológico. Esta pesquisa foi realizada com o objetivo de estudar, em laboratório, aspectos biológicos do predador Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) em diferentes condições fotoperiódicas (8L:16E, 10L:14E, 12L:12E, 14L:10E e 16L:8E), com luminosidade de aproximadamente 1.500 lux, temperatura de 25 ± 2ºC e UR de 70 ± 10%. O número de horas-luz não afetou a duração do período embrionário, o número, a duração e a viabilidade dos ínstares, bem como a mortalidade do adulto e o período de pré-oviposição. A duração das fases larval, pré-pupal e pupal diminuiu em função do aumento da fotofase. A viabilidade de ovos foi menor com 10h (85,6%) e 14h (77,8%) de luz. Observou-se uma relação inversa entre a duração da fotofase e a fecundidade, obtendo-se 778,3 ovos por fêmea a 8h de luz e de 233,0 ovos por fêmea a 16h. Não se constataram mudanças morfológicas, fisiológicas ou comportamentais que caracterizassem um sintoma de diapausa em C. externa. Esses resultados fornecem subsídios para o conhecimento do fotoperíodo ideal, visando melhorar as técnicas de criação dessa espécie em laboratório.

To know the influence of abiotic factors on bioecology of Chrysopidae, especially those from South America, is important in order to use these predators in biological control programs. This research was carried out with the objective of studying, in laboratory conditions, the influence of the photoperiods 8L:16D, 10L:14D, 12L:12D, 14L:10D and 16L:8D on biological aspects of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen), with light intensity near to 1,500 lux, temperature of 25 ± 2ºC and 70 ± 10% RH. The quantity of light did not affect the duration of the embryonic period, the number, duration and viability of instars, as well as adult mortality and pre-oviposition period. However, duration time of the larvae, pre-pupae and pupae decreased with the increase of the photofase. The eggs survival was smaller at 10h (85.6%) and 14h (77.8%) light. An inverse relationship was observed between photofase duration and fecundity, thus obtaining 778.3 eggs per female maintained at 8h light, and 233.0 eggs per female at 16h light. No morphological, physiological or behavioural changes were observed that could characterize a diapause symptom in C. externa population. These results help to improve the techniques for rearing the species in laboratory conditions.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar o efeito dos inseticidas endosulfam (1,05 g i.a./L), esfenvalerate (0,075 g i.a./L), fempropatrina (0,09 g i.a./L), triclorfom (0,09 g i.a./L) e triflumurom (0,0375 g i.a./L), utilizados para o controle de Alabama argillacea (Hübner), em ovos e larvas de Chrysoperla externa (Hagen), pulverizados em laboratório e transferidos para casa de vegetação. Avaliou-se a viabilidade dos ovos, o período embrionário e a sobrevivência de larvas de primeiro ínstar eclodidas desses ovos. Larvas de primeiro, segundo e terceiro ínstares foram pulverizadas com os inseticidas, verificando-se a sobrevivência das pupas obtidas, e a viabilidade dos ovos produzidos pelos adultos emergidos. Esfenvalerate e triflumurom provocaram aumento do período embrionário de C. externa, sendo que nenhum dos inseticidas avaliados causou redução na viabilidade dos ovos. Endosulfam, fempropatrina, triclorfom e triflumurom foram altamente tóxicos à fase larval do predador, acarretando mortalidade de 71% a 100%. Esfenvalerate causou mortalidade média de 20% para larvas de primeiro e terceiro ínstares e de 38% para o segundo ínstar, não afetando a viabilidade das pupas obtidas e a capacidade reprodutiva dos adultos, apresentando possibilidades de recomendação para uso em programas de manejo integrado de pragas na cultura do algodoeiro.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect the insecticides endosulfan (1.05 g a.i./L), esfenvalerate (0.075 g a.i./L), fenpropathrin (0.09 g a.i./L), trichlorfon (0.09 g a.i./L) and triflumuron (0.0375 g a.i./L), used to control Alabama argillacea (Hübner), on eggs and larvae of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen), under greenhouse conditions. Egg viability, duration of the embryonic period and survival of first-instar larvae ecloded from treated eggs were evaluated. For first, second and third-instar larvae treated with the insecticides, subsequent survival of the larvae and pupae, as well as viability of the eggs produced by the emerged adults, were evaluated. The insecticides esfenvalerate and triflumuron caused a significant increase in the embryonic period of C. externa. Endosulfan, fenpropathrin, trichlorfon and triflumuron were highly toxic to larvae, with mortality rates ranging from 71% to 100%. Esfenvalerate caused only about 20% mortality of the first- and third-instar larvae and 38% of the second-instar larvae. Besides causing low larval mortality, esfenvalerate did not affect pupae survival or the reproductive capacity of the adults in the studied period, thus showing good potential for use in integrated pest management in cotton crops.

Estudou-se a resposta funcional de Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) alimentada com cinco densidades de Schizaphis graminum (Rondani). O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com cinco tratamentos e dez repetições. Os ensaios foram conduzidos em câmaras climáticas a 25 ± 1ºC, UR de 70 ± 10 % e fotofase de 12 horas. Observou-se para os três ínstares um maior consumo em função do aumento na densidade de presas oferecidas; porém, houve uma tendência de estabilização no consumo a partir da densidade média de presas pré-estabelecida, exceto para o primeiro ínstar, que apresentou um aumento constante no consumo de pulgões. A duração do primeiro e terceiro ínstares, e da fase de larva como um todo, aumentou em função do aumento na disponibilidade de presas oferecidas. Entretanto, no segundo ínstar, a duração diminuiu em função desse aumento. Os resultados evidenciaram para o 1°, 2° e 3° ínstares e toda a fase de larva uma resposta funcional do Tipo II. Para a densidade média de presas oferecida foi avaliado o tempo de busca e manuseio. O menor tempo de busca foi verificado para larvas de segundo ínstar, enquanto que o primeiro ínstar apresentou o maior tempo de busca e de manuseio. O tempo de manuseio diminuiu progressivamente com o desenvolvimento da larva.

The functional response of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) fed on Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) was studied under five densities of prey. The experimental design was completely randomized with five treatments and ten replications. The tests were conducted in growth chambers at 25 ± 1ºC, RH of 70 ± 10% and photophase of 12 hours. Consumption increased in function of prey density in all instars. However, consumption tended to stabilize when a pre established average density of prey was offered, except for the first instar, which showed a constant increase in aphid consumption. The duration of the first and third instars and of the larval phase, as a whole, increased in function of the increased availability of prey. The duration of the second instar, however, decreased in function of increased prey availability. The results for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd instars and the larval phase showed a Type II functional response. Handling and searching time was evaluated for the average density of offered prey. The lowest searching time was verified for second instar larvae while the first instar showed the highest searching and handling time. Handling time dimi-nished progressively with larvae development.

O desenvolvimento larval e pupal de Ceraeochrysa cubana em diferentes dietas foi estudado. As larvas (20 por tratamento), foram criadas em laboratório a 25 ± 2 ºC, 70 ± 10% UR e fotofase de 12 horas, nas seguintes dietas: ovos de Anagasta kuehniella; Toxoptera sp.; Pinnaspis sp.; ovos de A. kuehniella + Toxoptera sp.; ovos de A. kuehniella + Pinnaspis sp.; Toxoptera sp. + Pinnaspis sp.; ovos de A. kuehniella + Toxoptera sp. + Toxoptera sp. As larvas que receberam ovos de A. kuehniella, em todos os tratamentos, apresentaram menor duração das fases larval e pupal e permitiram a obtenção de maior número de adultos com 75, 70, 95 e 80 % de viabilidade para os tratamentos com ovos A. kuehniella, ovos de de A. kuehniella + Toxoptera sp., ovos de A. kuehniella + Toxoptera sp. + Pinnaspis sp., respectivamente. Dietas com Toxoptera sp., Pinnaspis sp. e Toxoptera sp. + Pinnaspis sp. foram inadequadas para o desenvolvimento do predador com viabilidade de 0; 5 e 15 %, respectivamente.

Larval and pupal development of the predator Ceraeochrysa cubana (Hagen) on different diets was evaluated. Larvae (20/treatment), were reared in laboratory at 20 ± 2 ºC, 70 ± 10 % RH and 12 hours photophase on the following diets; eggs of Anagasta kuehniella; Toxoptera sp.; Pinnaspis sp.; eggs of A. kuehniella + Toxoptera sp.; eggs of A. kuehniella + Pinnaspis sp.; Toxoptera sp. + Pinnaspis sp.; and eggs of A. kuehniella + Toxoptera sp. + Pinnaspis sp. In all treatments, larvae fed on A. kuehniella eggs, showed shorter larval and pupal duration, higher number of adults, with viability of 75, 70, 95 and 80 % for treatments eggs of A. kuehniella, eggs of A. kuehniella + Toxoptera sp.; eggs of A. kuehniella + Pinnaspis sp., respectively. The diets with Toxoptera sp., Pinnaspis sp. and eggs of Toxoptera sp. + Pinnaspis sp. were the least suitable for the development of the predator with viability as low as 0; 5; and 15 %, respectively.
